Past Habits & States: Cómo usar «Used To» para hablar de tu pasado en inglés

Aprende a expresar lo que «solías» hacer (hábitos) y cómo «solías» ser (estados). Domina la pronunciación americana, las expresiones de tiempo clave y la regla de oro para no equivocarte nunca en negativo.

Cómo usar Used To en Inglés con Cindy

Esta clase la preparé antes de la lección que voy a dar en vivo en Youtube más que todo porque quería que vinieras a practicar inmediatamente este tema. También me emociona… bueno, ¿qué tema de inglés no me emociona si me fascina el idioma inglés? Pero es que te digo esto porque vamos acercándonos cada vez a cosas más y más avanzadas.

Lo bonito es que esto es tan útil, porque cuando tú estás conociendo personas uno tiende a contar historias, y por eso es que tal vez el tema del pasado me gusta tanto. En este caso, vamos a hablar de Past Habits and States (Hábitos y Estados en el pasado).

Okay, vamos a utilizar una estructura con una expresión que es Used To, que significa «solía». Te voy a explicar paso a paso como siempre, voy a ser lo más clara posible. Y por supuesto, quiero que veas la clase en video porque ahí platicamos juntos, pero también que hagas los ejercicios que te dejo abajo. ¡También te dejo una guía que puedes descargar para que puedas practicar o tener eso a la mano!

¿Cuándo usar «Used to»?

Usamos «Used to» para hablar de dos cosas principales del pasado, que ya no ocurren en el presente. Aquí te lo detallo:

📅 Past Habits
Things you did repeatedly in the past — but NOT anymore. Cosas que hacías repetidamente en el pasado, ¡pero que ya NO haces!
«I used to play soccer every day.»
→ Antes jugaba fútbol todos los días.
☁️ Past States
Situations or feelings that were true for a period in the past. Situaciones o sentimientos que fueron verdad por un periodo en el pasado.
«She used to be very shy.»
→ Antes ella era muy tímida.

¡Ojo! «Used to» ≠ Simple Past.
Simple Past = una acción específica. «Used to» = algo repetido o permanente que ya no ocurre.

La Regla de Oro (Afirmativo y Negativo)

La estructura en afirmativo es facilísima porque no cambia con ningún sujeto (I, You, He, She, They… todos iguales). Simplemente dices:
Sujeto + USED TO + Verbo en forma base.

Pero, ¡cuidado con el negativo! Aquí es donde casi todos se equivocan. En negativo usamos el auxiliar Didn’t, y como ese auxiliar ya está en pasado, la palabra «use» pierde la «D».

🍳 Mi receta para ti:

En negativo se escribe didn’t use to, NUNCA didn’t used to. ¡Solo el auxiliar lleva el pasado!

Expresiones de Tiempo (Time Expressions)

Para que suenes súper natural contando tus historias en inglés, necesitas usar estas expresiones. Las puedes poner al principio o al final de tu oración. ¡Toma nota!

  • When I was little Cuando era pequeño/a
  • Back in the day En aquella época / Antes
  • When I was a child Cuando era niño/a
  • In my childhood En mi infancia
  • As a kid De niño / De pequeño
  • When I was younger Cuando era más joven
  • When I was [10] Cuando tenía [edad] años
  • Growing up Mientras crecía / Durante mi niñez 🇺🇸 US Super nativa
  • In elementary school En la escuela primaria
  • In high school En la preparatoria / secundaria

Combina el «Used to» con las expresiones de tiempo y este vocabulario de juegos para crear oraciones perfectas.
